NLP was developed in the mid-70s by John Grinder, a Professor at UC Santa Cruz and Richard Bandler, a graduate student. NLP, as most people use the term today, is a set of models of how communication impacts and is impacted by subjective experience. It's more a collection of tools than any overarching theory.

Much of early NLP was based on the work of Virginia Satir, a family therapist; Fritz Perls, founder of Gestalt therapy; Gregory Bateson, anthropologist; and Milton Erickson, hypnotist.

Currently, there are training institutions not affiliated with the Society of NLP™ who are misrepresenting themselves to the public by training material that they acquired from reading a book. This is like opening up a dentistry practice after reading an article about pulling out teeth. The Society of NLP™ seal indicates approval and license though the Society of NLP™ and is your assurance of high quality and currant status.

When you are certified through the Society of NLP™, you will be liscensed to bear this seal on your advertising and business cards in connection with the services you provide, to use and practice the art and science of Neuro Linguistic Programming™ in whatever you do, and to represent to the public that you are certified at a specific level.
